Arachova-Delphi

OCTOBER 8
View of Arachova as we approach. The town is set on a hillside.
Another picture of Arachova.
The town is made up of lots of small, lovely streets. We saw children playing. It was delightful.
Temple of Zeus

Went to Delphi and saw where the oracle was and lots of temples and walked up to the theatre and the field. We were late getting down because we saw 2 mountain goats on the rocks on the way up. We had trouble getting Jeff to see them.
On the way to Delphi, saw a gypsy camp. These gypsies go around and pick the leftover produce, such as cotton, olives, etc. after the farmers are thru with their fields. They then sell them.
This is the Navel of the World. The oracle, a young girl doped up on lithium fumes, kept her hand on this "navel". It was said that the world was centered in Delphi, that is why it has the navel.

The Sphynx, notice the female face, as opposed to Egyptian, which has a male face.
Then went to the museum where they had a wonderful bronze of a chariot driver with reins in hand. Then back to hotel, then to town for dinner and we walked back to the hotel with Dave.

We went into the cemetery. It was wonderful. The tombstones were decorated with little shrines and lots of flowers and within the shrines were oil lamps that were lit. So the whole thing was amazing. Little lites all over. And it was very dark. We also saw a building that was open and full of boxes. We later found out that the dead were only allowed in the coffins for 3 years and then the bones were moved to the ossuary in boxes, some of which had decorations and pictures on them. The tombs were then used for other people. We found out that 2 women dressed in black come by each evening to light the oil lamps. We assume they come by in the morning to extinguish them.
