RHODES

OCT 15

Rhodes is a lovely walled ancient city, surrounded by a new bustling city. We, of course, had nothing to do with the new city. The city walls are surrounded by a dry moat, seen below. In the moat are many catapolt balls, used to try to knock down the city walls.

This is one of the walkways within the moat. Lovely! Within the walls are lots of tourist shops for eating and drinking and shopping.
It really is pretty. We spent all day just walking around, looking.

We visited the oldest Synogogue in Greece. It had a very moving memorial to the victims of the Shoa.
One of the many shopping streets, with a mosque at the end. There were mosques and churches and a synogogue, all in this walled city.
We were told in Ephesis, that sea sponges were used for toilet paper.....so I guess this is a toilet paper stand.
This doorway i made of seashells.
After walking around for many hours we came upon a turkish bath and we decided that it sounded like a great idea so we went in for a bath and massage. We got a towel, a key and a metal bowl. The attendant could not go into to the ladies side so Arleen was pretty much left on her own. He did give Duane a tour. First I got undressed and then used the key to lock the locker. After a visit to the WC, I was shown into a large room with some benches and basins around the side and a large stone platform in the center. We went through that room into another just like it only much warmer. I was shown to a small stool in front of a basin where he pantomimed adjusting the water to the right temperature and then how to use the bowl to ladle water over myself. After doing this for about 15 minutes a man came in and motioned for me to follow him into a small hot room where I laid down on the floor. After more bowls of hot water, he soaped me up using a coarse loofta mitt and then sought out my sore spots with great skill and loosened them up. Took all 15minutes max. Then it was back to the warmer room for more rinsing and to streach out on the stone platform to sweat and relax and rinse off again. Then after some time in the cool room before getting dressed and going to find Arleen.
It seems that the bath was originally designed for men, since Arleen only had one room, one temperature and no guide. She figured out what to do by watching. She enjoyed herself anyway.
After that, Duane was all used up.....
